AWE partners with XRAI to provide AI-assisted live captioning

Augmented World Expo (AWE), a provider of global spatial computing and XR events, has announced a partnership with XRAI Glass to caption and transcribe all nine stages at the 15th anniversary AWE USA 2024 event next month.

XRAI’s app combines the latest in extended reality and artificial intelligence technologies to provide real-time subtitles and translation, as well as empower users with an AI assistant. The solution also works seamlessly with the next generation of AR smart glasses, according to the company.

A statement from AWE mentioned that through its collaboration with XRAI, it aims to enhance the accessibility of its conference content. The upcoming AR/VR technology conference will leverage the XRAI platform to offer AI-generated subtitles in more than 75 languages for all nine conference stages. The event will be held in Long Beach, California from June 18-20.

Using the flagship XRAI Glass app on their mobile phones (iOS and Android), or using a pair of compatible smart glasses, AWE guests will be able to read an AI-transcribed feed from the stage and translate it into one of the 75+ available languages, all in real-time. Online viewers of the Main Stage sessions at AWE will also be able to use these AI transcriptions and translations via the conference’s YouTube channel.

Furthermore, AWE mentioned that a selected group of hearing-impaired participants will have the chance to interact with conference material using advanced XR glasses, enabling them to encounter real-time captioning through innovative spatial technology. These facilities will be provided at the XRAI and Qualcomm exhibition spaces.

“The partnership between XRAI and AWE marks a significant step towards inclusivity in the XR industry, and we are incredibly excited to bring our AI-powered translation capabilities to the forefront of this groundbreaking event,” said Dan Scarfe, Founder and CEO of XRAI. “By utilizing XR glasses for immersive captioning, we are not only breaking down communication barriers but also showcasing the transformative potential of AR and AI technologies in creating a more accessible and engaging conference experience.”

Sonya Haskins, AWE’s Head of Programming, expressed her excitement about partnering with XRAI for AWE USA 2024. This collaboration reflects their dedication to inclusivity and accessibility in the XR industry. Through the use of advanced AI and AR technology, they aim to eliminate language and hearing barriers, allowing all conference attendees to fully participate. They are eager to provide this innovative experience to their worldwide audience and demonstrate the immense possibilities of AR and AI technologies in organizing a more inclusive and interactive event.

AWE noted that globally, approximately 1.5 billion individuals, which accounts for nearly 20% of the population, experience hearing loss to varying degrees. Out of these, around 430 million people face considerable challenges due to their hearing impairment. AWE, the prominent international event for XR industry, strives to promote the advancement of AR and VR technology for the betterment of humanity. AWE is committed to demonstrating the practical benefits brought by technologies such as AI and AR glasses during its in-person events.
