The first significant Quest update in several months brings forth a new Navigator interface and a 3D feature for Instagram images. However, it will take some time for these updates to reach all Quest users, as they are still undergoing testing.

The v77 update commenced deployment for owners of the Meta Quest 3, 3S, Quest 2, and Quest Pro on May 19.

Here’s what’s included in the v77 update:

Navigator: An overhauled UI

The Navigator has been entirely reimagined. It aims to facilitate easier and more intuitive access to applications, quick actions, and settings. The app library is now at the forefront: the Navigator allows you to view recently used apps and pin up to ten favorite ones.

You can toggle the new UI on or off at any time by pressing the Meta button.

Initially, the Navigator will be available to selected users in the Public Test Channel (PTC) and will gradually be accessible to all users over the coming months.

The Meta Quest Help Center (US) offers more information and a video showcasing the Navigator.

“We created Navigator based on insights gathered over the past decade. It’s designed to be unobtrusive, intuitive, and constructed specifically for the distinct requirements of spatial computing,” notes Meta.

MIXED will provide a detailed examination of the Navigator as soon as we gain access.

3D Instagram Photos: Automated Stereoscopic Effect

Meta is evaluating an AI-driven algorithm that automatically transforms flat Instagram images into stereoscopic pictures with a depth effect when viewed through Meta Quest.

As this feature is still in the testing phase and is initially limited to a small number of users, it may take time before it becomes generally accessible.

The 3D photo transformation will be accessible for Meta Quest 3, 3S, 2, and Pro, and can be found within the Instagram app.

Other new features and improvements

  • Dynamic Panels: You can now configure panels to follow your movements around the room instead of remaining fixed in position. This removes the necessity of repositioning them each time. Currently, only one panel can trail behind you at a time.

  • Spatial Audio Toggle: You can now designate which apps and panels utilize spatial audio through the audio settings. Spatial audio creates the effect of sound coming from the actual location of the corresponding app or panel.

  • Support for Bluetooth LE Audio: Meta Quest now supports audio devices that use Bluetooth Low Energy. This feature remains experimental and needs to be activated in the Bluetooth settings.

  • Text-to-Speech Functionality: This new accessibility feature vocalizes text when you hover over it. Currently, only specific menus and app surfaces are compatible.

  • New Key Combination for Meta AI (USA and Canada): To prevent unintentional activation of the AI assistant, Meta has rolled out a new shortcut. Simply press the Meta button first, then the grab button. Meta AI on Quest is optional, must be activated in the settings, and is presently only available to North American users.
