2023 was arguably the best year for VR games to date. But 2024 could top it.
Last year, I commemorated the abundance of excellent virtual reality games. I expressed that there hasn’t been a more opportune moment to be a virtual reality player.
In addition to the three big budget titles Horizon Call of the Mountain, Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR and Asgard’s Wrath 2, there were many gems from medium and small VR studios such as Vertigo 2, Dungeons of Eternity, The 7th Guest VR, Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice, Racket Club, Arizona Sunshine 2 and many more that raised the bar for VR gaming.
2023 witnessed an unprecedented number of outstanding and sophisticated titles as compared to any previous year.
Four huge VR titles announced for 2024
Three virtual reality (VR) exclusive games, inspired by popular franchises, have already been announced for the year 2024.
First up is Alien: Rogue Incursion, an all-new alien adventure developed from the ground up for VR by veteran VR studio Survios (Westworld Awakening, Creed: Rise to Glory). For Batman fans, Batman: Arkham Shadow was announced as the first major Batman game in many years and, like Alien: Rogue Incursion, this title will be exclusive to VR. The same goes for Metro: Awakening, the latest installment in the Metro game series, which tells a new story in Glukhovsky’s post-apocalyptic universe and is being developed by Vertigo Games (Arizona Sunshine 1 & 2).
We can anticipate Behemoth, the upcoming major endeavor by Skydance Interactive, the studio behind the immensely popular VR game The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. Anticipations are elevated.
More Quest 3 exclusive titles to be expected
In addition to these four big VR games, there are many more, which you can see in our list of the most anticipated VR titles of 2024. It’s only May, and it’s amazing to see so many high-profile games already announced for 2024.
It is rumored that Meta will release a new headset this year, which will serve as a direct successor to Quest 2 and offer performance similar to Quest 3, but at a much lower cost. Additionally, Meta has announced exclusive VR games for Quest 3, such as Alien: Rogue Incursion and Batman: Arkham VR.
Meta is considering releasing additional Quest 3 exclusives in order to incentivize consumers to upgrade to their upcoming VR headsets.
