A fresh update for Meta Quest is now available. It enhances multitasking capabilities and simplifies the setup for multi-room environments.

Meta has opted for a skip in month and version numbering with the release of v74, currently being distributed to users of Meta Quest 3, 3S, Quest 2, and Pro.

As usual, the update might take up to a week or more to reach your device.

Summary of v74 enhancements

The latest Horizon OS update does not bring any significant new functionalities, but contains several minor quality of life improvements aimed at elevating the user experience.

  • Enhanced multitasking: Minimized 2D applications are now positioned above the universal menu, allowing you to see which apps remain open. You can tap on them to restore visibility. Furthermore, Meta notes that seamless multitasking, which was launched with v69, is progressively being rolled out for broader accessibility. This feature permits up to three 2D windows to remain open in immersive applications, letting you gather information, watch videos, or communicate with friends while the immersive app runs uninterrupted.
  • Website shortcuts in the app library: You now have the ability to add shortcuts to your preferred websites in the app library. This proves advantageous for the Quest-optimized Netflix experience, for instance. The shortcut feature is accessible in the browser.
  • Easier multi-room space setup: Scanning multiple adjacent rooms without disruption has become more effortless. We experimented with the multi-room space setup a few months prior.
  • Smoother transitions to immersive apps: The chances of encountering a black screen while an immersive application is loading have been decreased.
  • Night display mode passthrough optimization: The night display feature has been revised to enhance color balance, white point, and warmth consistency during passthrough experiences. You can activate the night display via Quick settings.
  • Enhanced secondary profiles: Secondary profiles can now utilize the Meta Horizon app and gain access to the companion app’s features. It remains unclear whether this capability is limited to the Quest owner’s smartphone or applicable to other smartphones as well.
  • USB-C casting: Quest 3 headsets can now cast directly to external displays with enhanced resolution and minimal latency. This functionality can be beneficial for content creators, livestreamers, and demonstration purposes. The cable must support Display Port Alt Mode. Meta has also worked on improving the reliability of all casting functionalities. The relevant option is located in the Quick settings.
  • Improved Meta Quest Link PC application: The application now features system tray support, offering quick access to device status and actions while the Meta Quest Link runs in the background.
  • Travel detection feature: Meta Quest is now capable of recognizing when you are traveling and will suggest activating travel mode.
  • Broader spatial audio support and clearer microphones: Meta has implemented spatial audio for 2D calling applications such as Whatsapp and the People app. Spatial audio allows sound from specific windows to appear as if emanating from their physical location. A new algorithm has also been introduced to enhance the balancing of microphone and game audio in real time, making the microphone clearer during video recordings. This feature remains optional.
  • Enhanced crash reporting: If an application crashes, you now have the capability to report the problem.
