Varjo introduces the latest headsets from the XR-4 series.

Varjo a company that specializes in high-quality virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) solutions, has revealed its latest line of XR-4 series headsets. The XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition, and XR-4 Secure Edition headsets aim to push the boundaries of virtual and mixed-reality technology.

According to the company, the Varjo XR-4 series provides virtual and mixed reality experiences that closely resemble natural sight by combining high-resolution displays, foveated capture stream, advanced LiDAR depth sensing, and camera sensors that emulate the human eye.

Varjo mentioned that their fourth-generation headsets are specially designed to offer highly engaging VR/XR experiences that surpass the capabilities of ordinary consumer-grade headsets used primarily for 2D productivity tasks. This enables them to meet the demands of industrial customers who need superior visual quality and performance.

Varjo’s technology is being utilized by more than a quarter of Fortune 100 companies, as per the company’s statement. It has diverse applications such as training astronauts and pilots, reducing automotive production timelines significantly, facilitating medical advancements, and creating 3D visualizations for architects and designers.

Accelerated by CUDA technology, our advanced graphics processing units deliver unmatched performance for a wide range of applications. Integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, the XR-4 series allows developers and industrial users to render photorealistic scenes and unlock ray tracing in mixed reality. Varjo stated that these combined technologies far surpass the computational power that can be achieved with a mobile chip and offer a game-changing solution for developers.

Moreove, the XR-4 series can seamlessly integrate with a wide range of Varjo-compatible software, consisting of over 100 third-party PC applications and 3D engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity. This integration allows for efficient usage of the XR-4 series in various industries like training and simulation, design and engineering, healthcare, and more.

“As we enter a period of rapid expansion in mixed reality adoption, we’re proud to drive the industry forward by bridging the gap between human vision and computer vision with our new XR-4 series,” said Patrick Wyatt, Chief Product Officer of Varjo. “For the past five years, Varjo customers have demonstrated that true innovation happens when the most advanced computing power meets the highest-immersion XR in the hands of industrial users, and we can’t wait to see the applications unlocked by the XR-4 series’ technological breakthroughs.”

Varjo claimed to be the pioneer in introducing the gaze-directed autofocus mixed reality pass-through feature in the VR/XR industry. This feature utilizes autofocus cameras that imitate human eye behavior. The XR-4 series is highlighted by several important features.

  • Dual 4K x 4K displays with a resolution of 51 pixels per degree (ppd) and over 50% wider field of view (120° x 105°) compared to previous-generation devices, with double the display brightness (200 nits) and wider color gamut with 96% DCI-P3;
  • Dual 20 Mpx cameras for powering the device’s high-fidelity, real-time photorealistic video pass-through mixed reality;
  • The latest ambient light sensors and significantly enhanced LiDAR resolution offer a seamless integration of real and virtual elements, surpassing the capabilities of the Varjo XR-3.
  • Built-in DTS 3D spatial audio with noise-canceling mics and integrated speakers for collaborative use cases;
  • Inside-out tracking and in-box Varjo Controllers, powered by Razer, providing precise interactions with high tactile immersion, and reducing setup complexity and cost;
  • Powered by NVIDIA RTX Ada Generation GPUs and integrated into NVIDIA Omniverse, the platform for connecting complex 3D pipelines and developing applications based on OpenUSD;
  • Optimized for seamless cloud streaming, sharing and collaboration in Varjo Reality Cloud to streamline immersive 3D workflows across organizations.

XR-4 Focal Edition

The XR-4 Focal Edition includes all the functionalities of the XR-4 model. Additionally, it provides gaze-directed autofocus cameras and enhanced camera resolution specifically designed for pilot training and other cockpit-related applications.

XR-4 Secure Edition

Varjo’s XR-4 Secure Edition headset is designed to cater to the requirements of government and defense customers. The company claims that it meets all the security standards set by government and enterprise-level entities. The XR-4 and XR-4 Focal Edition headsets have options that allow them to be used offline, and they are compliant with TAA regulations. Additionally, these headsets are non-RF and manufactured in Finland. Varjo has further enhanced its secure manufacturing capabilities by establishing a new facility in Espoo, Finland. This facility will have a dedicated manufacturing line for the XR-4 Secure Edition, which is scheduled to start operating in December.

The XR-4 series pricing starts at EUR €3,990 / USD $3,990. The new headsets are available for enterprise orders immediately, with first shipments starting in December. The Varjo XR-4 Focal Edition headset is also available to demo for the first time this week at I/ITSEC, the world’s largest training, simulation, and modeling event.
