The oil painting simulator Vermillion now lets you turn outdoor scenes into painting templates, thanks to Meta’s passthrough camera API.

Vermillion has received a new update. On Quest 3 or 3S, you can now take photos of your surroundings and optionally convert them into paint-by-numbers templates.

This feature is made possible by Meta’s new Passthrough Camera API. The API allows developers to access the passthrough cameras and apply custom computer vision algorithms and AI models to the videofeed.

In the past few weeks, we have seen some interesting early applications of the new API, including immerGallery and Twenty Guys, and experiments such as Lab Rats and Digitalizer.

You can purchase Vermillion in the Horizon Store.

What is Vermillion?

Vermillion is a VR app released in 2022 for Meta Quest that realistically simulates the wet-on-wet oil painting technique. It brings the experience of a personal art studio into your home—or even outdoors—without the usual mess and setup of traditional painting.

In the app, you can mix colors both on the palette and directly on the canvas with lifelike results. Users can choose from a variety of brushes, adjust pressure, and create different effects. A standout feature is the integrated web browser positioned right next to the easel, allowing you to watch YouTube tutorials or project reference images directly onto the canvas for tracing or inspiration.

A particularly helpful tool is the “paint-by-numbers” feature, which turns any image into a customizable template with an automatically generated color palette—perfect for beginners.

Vermillion also supports multiplayer sessions for up to four users. You can paint together, share palettes, or join virtual art classes—cross-platform between Quest and PC VR. Finished artworks can be displayed in your virtual studio, exported as image files, or even saved as 3D models for use in other VR environments.
