Disney has introduced an innovative technology called HoloTile for virtual reality (VR) encounters.
Disneyâs Imagineering Research & Development department has recently unveiled an intriguing new technology known as âHoloTile,â which it stated is âthe worldâs first multi-person, omni-directional, modular, expandable, treadmill floor.â
Disney has introduced a new invention called the HoloTile, which aims to improve immersive experiences at its parks. The mastermind behind this innovation is Disney Imagineer Lanny Smoot, who showcased the HoloTile in a recently released video.
Disney/Smoot states that the HoloTile technology is a treadmill floor that can be used by multiple individuals simultaneously. It is designed to provide an immersive virtual reality experience, where users can walk in any direction without the risk of colliding or stepping off the surface. The technology is modular and can be expanded as needed.
Disney also mentioned that the technology has the potential to improve on-stage performances, in addition to its applications for VR and immersive experiences. When incorporated into a theatrical stage, it could enable performers to move and dance in innovative ways. It could also facilitate the movement of stage props and structures, creating the illusion of self-setup.
âImagine a number of people being in a room, being able to be somewhere else collaboratively and moving around, doing sightseeing⊠Imagine theatrical stages that might have these embedded in them so that dancers can do amazing moves,â said Smoot. âThere are just There are numerous potential applications for this technology, and its ultimate utilization is still unknown.
In 2017, Disney submitted a patent application for a technology involving a modular floor system. This system consists of active tiles that contain multiple disks, each with a raised edge to form a flat surface on the tile.
The disks are set at specific angles to control the direction in which an object on the floor is moved. The floorâs drive system can also orient and rotate each disk, allowing the raised part of the disk to interact with objects on it, guiding their movement across the floor.
Disney announced that Smoot will be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He is the first Disney Imagineer to receive this recognition and only the second person from The Walt Disney Company to be inducted. The first was Walt Disney himself, who was honored posthumously in 2000 for his work on the multiplane camera.
