2K and Firaxis Games have officially revealed that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR will debut the renowned strategy franchise in virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) for the very first time. Crafted by PlaySide Studios in partnership with Firaxis Games and launched by 2K, the VR adaptation takes the existing content from the PC and console edition of Civilization VII and transforms it for Meta Quest 3 and 3S, featuring elements specifically tailored for an immersive gaming experience.
This iteration preserves the classic top-down viewpoint of the series, placing participants at a “Command Table,” a digital realm where they can supervise and steer their civilizations. Players have the ability to pull back for an overarching strategic layout or zoom in to scrutinize finer details like units, cities, and Wonders. Mixed reality functionality is also incorporated, allowing the Command Table to merge seamlessly into the user’s physical surroundings.

Beyond the VR and MR format, Civilization VII – VR upholds the essential mechanics of the franchise, with gamers stepping into the roles of historical figures vying for supremacy via military, cultural, diplomatic, or financial strategies. In this edition, AI-driven leaders are visible around the Command Table during diplomatic exchanges, enhancing player interaction in a more engaging atmosphere. The game also debuts The Archives, a system that visually chronicles a player’s civilization journey through engaging dioramas. Play speed is tweaked compared to the PC version, offering quicker default settings suitable for brief VR gameplay sessions.
The title accommodates single-player modes along with cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four participants. Matches can include both human and AI adversaries, with players immersing themselves in VR and MR as their chosen world leaders.

Consistent with earlier iterations of the Civilization franchise, Civilization VII adheres to the 4X strategy framework where players “explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate” to advance their civilizations from ancient times to the current age. Victory can be achieved through a variety of paths, including military triumphs, scientific discoveries, cultural impact, and economic power. The game rolls out new mechanics, featuring unique historical Ages alongside various civilizations, resources, and systems.
In contrast to previous games, leaders and civilizations are no longer fixed pairings, granting players the freedom to mix various historical figures with different nations. Moreover, several gameplay dynamics, such as expanding settlements and developing infrastructure, have seemingly been simplified.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII – VR is set to be launched on Meta Quest 3 and 3S in Spring 2025. Players can add it to their wishlist on the Meta Horizon Store.
