The iconic point-and-click adventure game Riven will be receiving a remake using UE5 and players will have the choice to enjoy it with a VR headset if desired.

Myst (1993) and Riven (1997) hold significant influence within the gaming industry during the 1990s.

Cyan Worlds, the surviving studio, has just announced a remake of Riven. This remake is set to be released in 2024 for both flat-screen and VR platforms. The specific VR platforms have not been disclosed yet. However, the PC version of the game will definitely have VR support, as mentioned on the newly launched Steam product page for the remake.

The studio describes the new Riven as follows:

Using the advancements in technology and the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, Cyan Worlds intends to recreate and enhance their concept of Riven. Their development efforts are concentrated on providing authentic experiences for both flatscreen and VR devices. This game will offer an unrivaled level of immersion that allows players to truly become immersed in the mysterious world of the D’ni Empire as they explore the deteriorating age of Riven.

Even those who are familiar with the original game will be captivated once again by its immersive gameplay, intricate plots, and stunning graphics. Cyan Worlds is committed to providing a distinctive and unforgettable gaming experience for both devoted followers and those who are new to the series.

The remake offers players the ability to freely explore a 3D environment in real-time, which was not possible in the original version. Currently, there is no available gameplay footage, but the trailer does display the game’s logo.

Cyan Worlds states that they are working on developing both the flatscreen and VR versions simultaneously, aiming to provide a top-notch experience regardless of the chosen platform.

Due to its extensive VR expertise, the studio successfully executed this task with their prior games, including Obduction (2016), Myst (2020), and Firmament (2023), all of which provided VR compatibility. Following a significant update in mid-2022, Myst’s Quest edition now allows players to utilize hand tracking.
