VoxelSensors, a semiconductor company based in Belgium that focuses on 3D perception technology for extended reality (XR), has revealed the purchase of EyeWay Vision’s industrial and intellectual property (IP) portfolio. This acquisition includes EyeWay Vision’s knowledge in gaze tracking and projection technology for XR. The exact amount paid for the acquisition was not disclosed by VoxelSensors.
Founded in 2014, EyeWay Vision is an Israeli company pioneering immersive XR glasses. Its offering consists of a novel gaze-contingent projection architecture including the underlying technology, such as dynamic exit pupil shifter, varifocal foveated projection, laser-based gaze tracker, and sequential graphical pipeline.
According to VoxelSensors, this architecture simultaneously addresses many critical XR requirements, such as:
- Power efficiency for all-day use
- Daylight visibility and dynamic range
- Solves the vergence accommodation conflict and continuous varifocal interaction
- There is no noticeable delay and the image remains on the screen without any lingering effect.
- “Virtually pixel-less” and photorealistic perceived 5K image; and
- Having a broad range of sight, situational awareness is enhanced.
VoxelSensors announced that incorporating EyeWay Vision’s technology with their Single Photon Active Event Sensor (SPAES) will enhance their standing in the fields of mobile and XR with regard to spatial and empathic computing.
“The collaboration between SPAES and EyeWay Vision’s technology satisfies the needs of customers who require energy-efficient, fast, and accurate perception and interaction systems. This paves the way for exciting integration possibilities in mobile and XR platforms, offering immersive and user-friendly experiences that revolutionize spatial and empathic computing,” stated VoxelSensors’ CTO, Ward van der Tempel. “The combination of these technologies pushes the limits of what is achievable and signifies a significant advancement in our industry.”
The purchase comes after the acquisition. recent closure of VoxelSensors’ EUR €9.5 million Seed Round, which the company stated has empowered it to push forward with its ambitions of fusing depth sensing and gaze tracking for delivering enhanced immersive experiences. The company is now set to expedite the development and rollout of its technology with an upcoming Series-A funding round.
Johannes Peeters, the CEO of VoxelSensors, expressed that the acquisition of EyeWay Vision’s IPs and the mobile depth system are significant achievements for their company. These advancements establish them as a major player in the constantly evolving market of spatial and empathic computing for mobile and XR devices. By merging their technologies, they can provide smooth and instinctive interactions in these areas, greatly improving the user experience while utilizing their efficient SPAES sensor.
VoxelSensors announced that it will soon showcase its initial Spatial Awareness system for mobile devices at MWC Barcelona. This system utilizes one of the company’s SPAES sensors and a single illuminator. The innovative system is a component of VoxelSensors’ product lineup, aimed at providing efficient and accurate spatial awareness and empathic computing with minimal power consumption and latency.
The company acknowledged that its Spatial Awareness system can be used for intuitive user interfaces, biometric face authentication, improved photos and videos, and enhanced mobile augmented experiences.
