DPVR, a developer of virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) hardware and software innovations, has recently showcased its Seated VR Cinema Solution at the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival.
The company revealed its solution during the âInternational VR Screening Showcaseâ last week, presenting two VR films: Tales of the Cinema and Italian Film History in the Waterfall.
Technology Driving the Experience
DPVR states that its Seated VR Cinema Solution incorporates three primary technologies to enhance immersive film watching:
- 4K display with an extensive field of view: The experience utilizes the P1 Pro headset from the company, which boasts a 4K ultra-high-definition display and a 120° field of view, designed to deliver exceptional image clarity.
- Real-time head tracking: A multi-camera tracking system is employed to replicate head movements within virtual environments, facilitating seamless visual transitions.
- Optimized rendering: The rendering algorithms developed by the company are crafted to minimize latency and prevent image tearing for an enhanced viewing experience.
Additionally, DPVR indicated that the solution features a VR Content Management System that enables end-to-end encrypted streaming and synchronized playback on up to 40 headsets. Content delivery and viewing are centrally managed, emphasizing the protection of intellectual property.
Emphasis on VR Storytelling
The Tales of the Cinema film employs spatial modeling to illustrate the development of a century-old theater. When viewers concentrate on specific seats, they activate historical footage of previous audience members who occupied those spots.
Italian Film History in the Waterfall merges montage-style editing with spatial media to weave hundreds of Italian film clips into VR, all situated within the Monte Gelato waterfall backdrop. As viewers shift their heads, they navigate through various timelines and narrative dimensions.
âMoving my head took me back a hundred years â I truly felt as if I were immersed in history, watching films just as people did in that era. Itâs much more genuine than conventional 3D cinema,â remarked an attendee at the festival.
Commenting on the showcase, Derek Liu, COO of DPVR, stated: âOur Seated VR Cinema Solution garnered significant praise this year, with some critics calling it âa breakthrough in cinematic language,â emphasizing VR’s potential to transform storytelling approaches and audience engagement.â
