Meta has unveiled Youtube co-viewing availability on Meta Quest. MIXED has tested it out.
Youtube co-viewing lets users enjoy Youtube together with friends in Horizon Home or through the passthrough feature of Meta Quest.
I experienced co-viewing in October alongside my friend Christian Steiner. Our insights at that time were:
“In general, we enjoyed the YouTube co-viewing experience. It’s simple to gather in VR and watch YouTube in fantastic quality. YouTube co-viewing adds another useful feature to Quest, and we’re excited to observe its future enhancements.”
Additional information regarding Youtube co-viewing
In the Quest blog, Meta shares some details that are newly revealed or previously unconfirmed:
- Invitations can be sent to a maximum of 7 friends.
- All parties must follow each other for the invitation to be successful.
- Currently, only 2D content is supported, with the possibility of immersive formats being introduced later.
- To view paid content, all users must either have purchased or own the content.
- Youtube Co-Watch is launching in beta.
The highest resolution for the streamed content is yet to be verified. We managed to view 4K content in our hands-on.
