Meta has unveiled one of the most significant updates for Meta Quest to date, featuring an extensive array of new functionalities and enhancements.
The v71 firmware update will begin rolling out to Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2, and Quest Pro users starting November 4, 2024. As usual, it may take up to a week or longer for the update to be delivered to all users.
This update stands out as one of the largest in recent memory and encompasses the following new features and improvements:
- A revamped appearance for Horizon OS: Meta has refined both the dark and light theme of Quest’s operating system to enhance menu readability and contrast. Additional improvements include changes to the control panels’ look and functionality, repositioning of the control bar, adjustments to the colors of different interface elements, and much more. The Meta Quest settings have also been entirely overhauled, and the search feature has been enhanced.
- Continuous Space Setup: You’re now able to resume your room setup and modify your room scan with a new arrangement and furniture, rather than starting a completely new room scan. Meta Quest will now present a representation of the scanned space once the room has been scanned and when you revisit Space Setup to refresh the scan.
- Enhancements for passthrough functionality: Meta indicates it has adjusted the camera frame rates to align with the display’s frame rates.
- More lifelike facial expressions for Meta avatars: A new AI feature dubbed Audio to Expression generates realistic facial expressions and lip sync cues from microphone input. While a similar feature called Lipsync previously existed, it was limited to mouth animation; Audio to Expression now incorporates the upper portion of the face, including upper cheeks, eyelids, and eyebrows.
- Support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Surround: Meta Quest now provides support for Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital Surround within select browser content. Meta intends to broaden support for additional content providers in the near future.
- Enhancements to Meta Quest Link: Meta’s PC VR streaming solution is now enabled by default, and the Meta Quest Link PC application has seen multiple enhancements: Remote Desktop is now incorporated into the PC app, eliminating the need for a separate app download, and the connection option is now located in Quick Settings. Another new addition is the ability to stream your headset content to the Meta Quest Link PC app, which was previously restricted to the mobile Meta Horizon app, Chromecast, and browser.
- Volume mixer: Meta has introduced a volume mixer that allows you to independently adjust the volume of calls, applications, and media (see video). The volume mixer can be accessed in Quick Settings by selecting the advanced option beside the main volume.
- Enhanced travel mode: Travel mode has been expanded to encompass trains, whereas previously only air travel was officially supported.
- Calendar application: A new calendar function assists in tracking significant appointments (see video). It features integration with Google and Outlook calendars and offers direct access to events in Horizon Worlds and meetings within Horizon Workrooms.
- Increased transparency for app notifications: The universal menu now provides real-time visibility into the permissions that apps are using.
- Sharing videos in Horizon Chats: You can now send and receive videos using the Horizon chat function, whether in VR or through the companion app. This feature is compatible with spatial videos as well.
