Roblox Unveils Cube 3D and Mesh Creation API

March 19, 2025 – Roblox, the worldwide immersive platform for creation, communication, and connection, has announced this week the open-source release of Cube 3D, a foundational model for 3D that facilitates the creation of 3D objects and environments on the Roblox platform directly from textual prompts.

In conjunction with the release, Roblox has unveiled the first of Cube 3D’s capabilities with the beta launch of the company’s Mesh Generation API, allowing developers to forge 3D assets more effectively.

Roblox indicated that Cube will serve as the foundation for many AI tools the company intends to develop in the upcoming years, which will include highly sophisticated scene-generation tools. Ultimately, Cube will evolve into a multimodal model, trained on text, images, video, and various forms of input, and will integrate seamlessly with Roblox’s current AI creation tools. Future iterations of Cube will also have the capacity to create 3D models and environments from image inputs, as per the company’s statement.

AI-Driven 3D Creation

Cube 3D is trained on inherent 3D data from the Roblox platform, setting it apart from current methods that depend on 2D image reconstruction. The model has been designed to comprehend shapes as tokens, essentially tokenizing 3D objects in a fashion akin to how large language models (LLMs) analyse words.

Consequently, Cube 3D has been conditioned to anticipate the succeeding shape in a series, empowering it to assemble complete 3D objects. Extending this capability to full scene production, Cube 3D forecasts the arrangement while recursively anticipating the shape needed to finalize that layout. Additionally, Roblox reports that anyone can fine-tune, develop plugins for, or train Cube 3D utilizing their own data to cater to their requirements.

“Players can customize their experiences in ways developers never envisioned, and that’s going to enhance their games’ engagement.”

Empowering Developers with AI Tools

Throughout the past year, Roblox has integrated AI-powered tools into its Roblox Studio development platform, such as an AI Assistant aimed at simplifying 3D creation. With the rollout of Cube 3D and the Mesh Generation API, developers can produce assets more swiftly, cutting down on manual labor and facilitating faster iteration of design concepts.

The beta launch of the Mesh Generation API permits developers to generate 3D assets in just seconds by entering straightforward prompts. These generated objects are compatible with game engines and can be further enhanced with textures, colors, and additional details. Roblox anticipates that AI-driven tools like Cube 3D will greatly lessen the time taken for asset creation, allowing developers to concentrate on broader design elements rather than dedicating hours on individual models. In the long run, Roblox intends to enable creation of more complex and functional objects, even complete scenes.

In a blog entry announcing the launch of Cube 3D, Anupam Singh, Vice President of Engineering, and Nick Tornow, Vice President of Creator Engineering at Roblox, stated: “We envision a future where developers empower their users to become creators through AI. With the Mesh Generation API active, players can materialize anything they can conceive… Players can customize their experiences in ways developers never anticipated, and that’s going to make their games even more engaging.”

Open-Source AI and Future Development

Roblox mentioned that to tackle the significant technical challenge of linking text and images with 3D shapes, it developed a unified architecture for 3D generation using autoregressive transformers, a variant of neural network that forecasts the next component based on preceding inputs.

The company claims that this method facilitates both scalability and multimodal compatibility, allowing for the processing of text, visual, audio, and 3D inputs as the model evolves. Roblox has made its model open-source, and in this initial stage, creators will be able to fabricate 3D objects based on textual prompts.

Cube 3D’s architecture processes text and image inputs through ShapeGPT for 3D shape generation and LayoutGPT for spatial organization, enabling structured scene creation from text prompts.

What Will Cube Be Able to Do in the Future?

In addition to individual object creation, Roblox aims to enhance Cube 3D’s functions to encompass full scene generation. The company envisions AI aiding in layout design and object placement, leading to a more interactive and dynamic virtual environment where various elements are functional within a scene and in relation to one another. Roblox refers to this as “4D creation,” where the fourth dimension is interaction among objects, environments, and individuals.

In the long-term vision, Roblox anticipates Cube facilitating in-game AI generation, permitting players to create and adapt assets dynamically. Future updates are expected to further integrate Cube into the platform’s AI ecosystem.

The open-source iteration of Cube 3D is set to be available later this week.
